Digitize FAQ

Why should I digitize my photo collection?

Have you ever looked at some old pictures you loved and thought you may as well throw them away because of fading and discoloration? Do you want future generations to know about their heritage? Here is why you should digitize:

Preserve: You can stop time in its tracks! Once digitized, your photos are no longer subject to fading, tearing, creasing, staining, or any one of many disasters that can befall them. You may keep copies in a safe place to guard against theft, fire, floods, and the like. If any print that you make from these images gets lost or destroyed, just make another from your digital image.

Restore: You can reverse time! Our scanning process automatically eliminates dust and scratches on your photos, and also restores faded color and lost contrast. For those extra-special photos, our imaging experts can touch problem areas up by hand.

Enhance: You can improve your photos, and make them better than new! We can eliminate the red-eye look and distractions, like the “rabbit ears” behind your head in an otherwise wonderful group shot. We can make color photos black-and-white, or colorizing your old black-and-white photos. Special effects, such as softening the background make the subject really stand out. We can even eliminate the background entirely and put the subject in a new setting! If someone couldn’t attend the family reunion, we can add that person to the family picture! We can even remove an people and objects from a photo.. The only limits are your imagination!

Organize: Once scanned, you may file away or even throw away your original prints, negatives, and slides. Your photos are now archived on disk, taking up much less storage space, and ready for viewing, copying, or editing at any time.

Share: Because copies of digital photos are exactly the same as the originals, you may make as many copies as you like with absolutely no degradation in quality. No more fighting over who gets to keep the family heirloom photos! You may e-mail your photos, upload them to the web, and create photobooks and slideshows.

Convenience: No more shoeboxes of old photos taking up room in the closet! No more trays of slides in the basement, unusable since the projector broke years ago! Your photos are readily at hand, on CDs or DVDs, ready to be used at the click of a mouse. If you prefer, we can create a video slide show that you can play on your TV, or a beautiful custom photobook for your own memories or to give as a gift.

Cost: Once your photos are digitized, you have the option of printing any image you want yourself on your own printer or selecting some to send to any photo printing service such as those found in most discount stores and drugstores. Also, the cost of having prints made from digital images is much lower than the cost of the traditional method of reprinting photos from prints (and as a bonus, the prints made from the digital images will be sharper and have more accurate color than traditional reprints).

What can I have digitized?

We scan and restore prints, slides, negatives, documents, VHS or VHS-C videos, 8mm & Super 8 film and even your audio tapes and records! Many people never think about digitizing some of the things they may be saving, such as old newspaper clippings, programs from a game or the theater, tickets, a brochure or map from a vacation. If you saved it, you may want to use it someday in a book, so we suggest digitizing those with your photos of the event.

Are there any restrictions on what can be printed, or digitized?

A Page is Turned asks that you have copyright permission for all images included in your order. Most family albums are taken by family members and there is no problem. Many professional photographers, now that we’re in the digital age, give their customers total rights to their images. For very old professional portraits, the studio may not even exist anymore. In this case, we will accept them if they are your personal property, and you are using them for personal use. Additionally, we cannot process any illegal and/or immoral content.

Why not just do it myself?

You certainly can scan your own photos, but of course you must first buy all the necessary equipment and software (and learn how to use it), and use a lot of your spare time to scan your photos. Photo scanning, even on the best scanning equipment (like we use) takes quite a bit of time to digitize each image. What is your time worth? Who wants to be stuck inside scanning old photos on a beautiful sunny day? Not to mention that of the cheap scanners that you can buy will produce much poorer quality scans than our equipment, especially in the hands of our skilled technicians. With our service, every photo is checked over in our quality-control process, and if a scan is deemed to be unacceptable in terms of color accuracy and sharpness, the photo is re-scanned and the image is corrected to make it the best that it can possibly be.

Where do I begin?

Our Home Page has a section called “Getting Started”. Please read through that, then click on each process, one at a time, Sort, Scan, Select, Save, and Store – and read about each process. That should get you on your way to creating a great photo library. If you have further questions, please give us a call.

How much does it cost?

Much restoration occurs in the scanning process. So your original picture may look much better once it is simply scanned and saved to CD or DVD. If you have hundreds of pictures, we suggest that you have us scan them as-is and transfer them to CD or DVD to prevent any further deterioration. It’s an extra step, but can save you money in the long run by allowing you the time to look through them on DVD, and pick and choose specific pictures to have us restore and enhance as you need them for printing, slide shows, or photobooks.

Digitizing Prices:

Prints – Color or Black & White

Prints, black & white as well as color, will be scanned in at one of two resolutions, output in the TIFF format, and converted to high-quality JPEG files for storage convenience. The resolution that you choose depends upon how you will be using your photos. For most uses, scanning at 300 dpi is more than sufficient to bring out good detail for pleasing images. If you plan to make any prints larger than 8×10, you may want to have us scan at the 600 dpi resolution for maximum detail. Of course, the resulting files will be larger, and so fewer of them will fit on each disk.

NOTE: We can scan photos much larger than 8½″×11″, but this requires special handling – call for details.

Output: A Note About File Types

The JPEG file type is most often used for photo storage because of the compact file size, compared to a TIFF file, making it more convenient for use in slide shows, sending in e-mails, etc. But there are some compromises involved in the JPEG format. These are minimal at the high-quality JPEG level that we use, and for most purposes, you cannot tell the difference between the two types. However, if you prefer, we can leave the image in the TIFF format, just let us know at the time of your order. Keep in mind that the resulting files will take up more space on disk. If you want both TIFF and JPEG files, let us know that also. To get both file types, add 15% to your scanning total.

35mm slides

We will bring your slides back to life by scanning them. We are able to scan your slides at different resolutions. Which resolution you choose depends upon your ultimate use for the images. For most consumer-grade films, scanning at 2000 dpi (dots per inch) will bring out more than enough detail to produce pleasing images. If you are going to be making large prints (greater than 8×10), we suggest that you have us scan at 4000 dpi. This resolution guarantees that all possible detail will be read from the slide, right down to the grain of the film, but of course will result in a larger file size, and therefore, fewer images per disk. We crop out the slide mount and rotate your images to their correct orientation – and all of this is included in our basic scanning cost.

All scans are made with state-of-the-art Nikon scanning equipment. Prices shown include Digital ICE (dust and scratch reduction)*, Digital GEM (grain and noise reduction), exposure and color correction and rotation to correct orientation. Many of our competitors charge extra for these enhancements.

* Digital ICE is not available for use on black & white images and may not work properly with some Kodachrome® slides.

35mm negatives

Having your negatives scanned is much better than having the prints scanned as prints fade much faster than the negatives. When negatives are processed into prints there is some quality loss. When prints are stored in a photo album there is, over time, even more quality loss. Since the negatives were not handled as often and since the negatives do not fade nearly as quickly as the prints the quality of an image scanned from a negative will be much better than one from a print.

We require that negatives be in 2 to 6 frame strips. (Most processed film is returned by the film lab to you this way.) We must scan negative strips of film in their entirety. We cannot single out frames within each strip. We crop out the negative edges and rotate your images to their correct orientation – and all of this is included in our basic scanning cost.

Options:

Scanning options include scanning the photos at higher color resolution to allow more versatility when editing (higher color resolution means you have a greater range of colors available in your image, which can be useful when correcting color errors after scanning), and multi-sample scanning, which can lessen “noise” and bring out detail in dark portions of an image. Both of these options add considerable time to the scanning process, and therefore add additional cost to the procedure.

How do I get my photos to you to be scanned?

Photo prints:

Prints lead a hard life. They are passed around, pressed into albums, hung in frames, and consequently, they are exposed to dust, dirt, fingerprint oils, chemicals from plastic cover sheets, and direct sunlight, which fades them rapidly. We much prefer scanning slides or negatives to prints, as they will result in better images, and therefore, happier customers. And we want you to be a happy customer. But we understand that a negative of a particular photo is not always available, especially with old photos. When sending your prints to us to be digitized, we request that you sort them into short stacks of about 20-30 photos each. Please include a short description written on a piece of paper with each stack, and bundle with either a rubber band around each, or put each stack into an envelope or zip-lock bag with the descriptive name on the front. These names will be used as the folder names when we organize your digital files on your discs. If you include a name on the back of each picture, we will even label the digital picture for you at no extra cost. Let us know if you have a preference as to a photo for the front of your CD and box, as well as a title.

Slides:

We prefer you to bundle your slides together (rubber banded both directions) in groups of approximately 50 slides, each one labeled with a short description that will be used by us as a folder name when we organize your digital files on the CDs or DVDs. On each bundle, please mark lightly in pencil the first slide in that bundle. Along with these, please include a list of the names for each bundle in the order that you would like to see them on the disc. This way, we will be able to keep them organized as you wish throughout the scanning process. Let us know if you have a preference as to which slide to use for the front of your CD and box, as well as a title.

Negatives:

Negatives are usually returned by your photofinisher in strips of two to six, in glassine envelopes, along with your prints. If this is how your negatives are stored, feel free to leave them in the sleeves when you send them to us. If the sleeves are joined together, you may mark on the sleeves which strips you wish to be scanned. We scan negatives in these short strips, and we scan each strip in its entirety. If you must remove the strips from their protective pouches (to sort them, etc.), please handle them carefully, and only by the edges near the sprocket holes. Some photographers store their negatives in sleeved pages, and we also accept these; just be sure to tell us which strips you wish to be scanned. Let us know if you have a preference as to a photo for the front of your CD and box, as well as a title.

Videos & Film:

While not as fragile a photographs, slides, and negatives, we still recommend caution when packing your videotapes for shipping. It’s best to wrap them in paper or bubble wrap before putting them in the shipping carton. This will keep stray packing material (Styrofoam peanuts, etc.) from working their way into the tapes. Please label each tape with the name you wish have on your DVD. If you'd like, include a photograph you would like to be printed on the front of your DVD and box.

In General

We realize that not everyone has the time or is otherwise able to sort through years of old photos, but still may want them digitized for safe-keeping. To that purpose, we will accept your photos, slides, and negatives “as-is”. Please understand that the digitized files will be returned to you on disc unsorted. You will not be as happy with the CD later, when you go to find a particular picture or group of pictures, and have to look through hundreds, or even thousands. Those who have taken the time to sort and label, are always happier with their investment in the long run.

If you are shipping your photos to us, please pack them well. Few things are more disheartening to us than to receive a box of photos that are damaged from improper packaging. Make sure that all of your stacks are securely bundled, and you use enough packing material to fill the rest of the box. We strongly advise you to put all of your photo bundles into sealable plastic bags (like freezer storage bags) within the box. This serves the dual purpose of keeping dust and stray packing materials away from your photos, and more importantly, protecting them from any moisture problems if the box should happen to get wet in transit.

Most people are understandably nervous about handing their precious family heirlooms over to anyone, but rest assured, we handle your photos like they are our own. Unlike some of our competitors, we do not send your photos to a third-world country to be digitized; every order stays in-house, safe and secure, until the job is done and your photos are shipped safely back to you.

Restore FAQ

What can be restored?

Anything we can scan, we can restore. A photo larger than an 8½″ × 11″ requires special handling, which does cost extra. Call for more information on these.

How can you improve the look of my old photos?

Slide and negative films are extremely fragile items; it doesn’t take much abuse to damage them. Something as simple as household dust can collect on them, and cleaning that dust off can scratch them. Under damp conditions, mold can grow as it feeds off of the dyes in the film. Fingerprints result from handling them. And even under ideal storage conditions, film deteriorates as it ages; the images on it gradually discolor and fade away. Most photos that we receive, while precious family heirlooms, nevertheless have been subject to storage in less than ideal conditions, or subject to rough handling in the course of their existence.

On every scan of your slides and negatives, we employ a battery of digital technologies that can help us turn back the clock. Our basic prices include the use of Digital ICE, GEM, and ROC (if needed) on your images to give you the best possible quality scan that your photos deserve. Most image scanning services only include these services at an extra charge, based on the fact that using these increases the time involved in the scanning process – sometimes by as much as 300%.

Digital ICE (Image Correction and Enhancement):

Photos courtesy Eastman Kodak Company, ASF

This technology is licensed by Kodak, and built into our Nikon scanners and their scanning software. It is used to remove surface defects, such as dust and scratches. The ICE technology works from within the scanner, so unlike the software-only solutions it does not alter any underlying details of the image. Because of the technology involved, Digital ICE works only on color film and C-41-processed black-and-white film. Traditionally processed black-and-white films must have these defects removed by hand. In addition, Digital ICE works with varied results on Kodachrome®-processed slides. Call us for further details on this.

Digital GEM (Grain Equalization & Management):

Photos courtesy Eastman Kodak Company, ASF

The high resolution of the scanners that we use capture all of the detail in your photos. This means that even the grain of the film is brought out to a degree that it can become visible to the naked eye in an enlargement. Digital GEM can reduce the visibility of this grain. This results in an image with “smoother” tones in areas where photographic grain is apparent, such as skin tones and skies. Its algorithms work to do this without softening the details to any appreciable degree, and it works with all film types.

Digital ROC (Restoration Of Color):

Photos courtesy Eastman Kodak Company, ASF

The original color of negatives and prints tends to fade with time, resulting in a reddish or bluish tint. Photos taken in certain light such as tungsten or fluorescent, cast a yellowish or greenish tint over the image. Regardless of the condition of the original photograph, Digital ROC automatically restores color quality to the image during the scanning process. Not every image requires color restoration, however, and some photos don’t come out well using the color settings that Digital ROC provides. We use the technology selectively, and override the settings when the results from Digital ROC don’t look good to our eyes.

Our ultimate goal

…is to give you the best possible digital image from your cherished photographs – period.

How much does it cost?

Restoration is $60.00 per hour. Much restoration occurs in the scanning process. If you have a lot of pictures, and you haven’t sorted them to see if there are any you want to eliminate, we suggest that you have us scan them and transfer them to CD or DVD to prevent any further deterioration. Then you can look at them at your leisure and note the ones you want to have further restored or enhanced. For most jobs, we can do 10 to 30 photos in an hour. For those in very poor condition, it’s possible to spend an hour on one photograph, so it’s important that you think ahead as to how the photos may be used in the future. But once they are digitized onto CD or DVD, you can always have them further restored or enhanced when needed for that 50th wedding anniversary slide show – or the book of her life you’d like done for your daughter’s college graduation.

Enhance FAQ

What is Enhance as opposed to Restore?

Restoring is bringing your photo back to its original condition, or as close as possible, depending on its condition. A picture with a crease or tear, and sometimes even a missing corner can usually be restored. The scanning process alone will restore some of the original color in a faded photograph, but we can usually improve on that with a little restoration. Removing dust and scratches is a restore process.

Enhancing a photo will make it better than the original. Have you been on vacation and asked someone to take a picture of you, and when you get it back you find you are a speck in the center? We can zoom in and crop it to create a much more pleasing picture. Have you zoomed in on a subject with your camera, only to realize later that the elbow of the person next to your subject got into the picture? We can remove that elbow!  How about that picture of you on the beach – but the horizon is at an angle? We can straighten it for you. Removing red-eye, whitening teeth, taking out a few wrinkles, removing a blemish – these are all examples of enhancing. Enhancing can include special effects, such as a soft blur, adding text or borders, colorizing a black-and-white photo, making a color photo black-and-white – but maybe you’d like the bride’s bouquet to remain in color. There are endless possibilities.

How much does it cost?

As with restoring, we charge $60.00 per hour for enhancements. We suggest enhancing photos when you intend to use them, such as if you are doing a scrapbook or anything for which you would like to have prints made, such as enlarging or putting into a frame; also, when you are ready to order a slide show, or want us to create a photobook for you or as a gift. They will then be saved to a new CD or DVD for you.

Slideshow FAQ

How many pictures can I have in a slideshow?

The length of any of our custom slideshows is limited only by the size of the files that will fit on a Video CD or Video DVD disc. This means that your slideshow could be over an hour in length! Most shows that move at a moderate pace will utilize about 60-80 photos for a 12-15 minute show. A faster-paced show (say, a sports team season highlight show) will use more, and a slower-paced show (like a memorial) will use fewer photos. And you are not strictly limited to still photographs. We can include video clips in the show, along with audio clips (for instance, we can use a narration audio track, or sound effects, along with your music). The length of your show should be limited mostly by the attention span of your audience. Keep in mind that with a slideshow, you are telling a story; with a beginning, middle, and an end. Choose your photos and video clips with that storyline in mind, and together, we will produce a show that will wow your audience and leave them wanting more!

Music soundtrack are synchronized to the slides for maximum impact. If you own the music you want to use,, we charge just $2.00 per song. You need to provide it to us on CD or MP3 format. This is to adhere to federal copyright laws. If you cannot provide the music, we can get it for you from one of the legal music downloading services, such as iTunes, at a cost to you of $3.50 per song. Many people prefer to have us choose the music that suits the slides. We have a large library of music we already own, so if music we have works for you, the cost is $2.00 per song.

We produce custom slideshows, made-to-order for your event or memory. The above prices include scanning your photos, doing basic restoration work if needed, and the process of timing slides and transitions to the soundtrack, inserting narrative tracks, if you have them, mixing the audio tracks, adding captions, submitting the show online for your approval, and any final revisions. It also includes the first copy of your show on DVD, with a custom label, and in a presentation box. Additional copies are available for $11.00 with the same custom label and box as the original, or $8 for a copy in a jewel case.

Our shows are not the “cookie-cutter” shows that you might find elsewhere. Our shows are hand-produced, by professionals. Your photos, and any effects, are timed to fit cues on the soundtrack, to elicit maximum emotional response from your audience. We take great pains to ensure that your slideshow is the absolute best that it can be. Our goal is to produce goosebumps and tears!

Can I use any music and/or photos that I like in my show?

Copyright law restricts the use of most material to what’s called “fair use”, which means that if we incorporate the music of your choice in your show, you must have purchased that recording, either on CD, tape, record, or download (from iTunes, etc.). The resulting show is to be used for non-commercial use only. We also are restricted from using any material in which the rights under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) do not expressly belong to you. We do have a production music library (royalty-free) available for your show, if you desire. We will not incorporate any material that may be construed as condoning illegal or immoral activity. See our Terms and Conditions page for further details.

Photobooks FAQ

What are the differences between the Classic, Classy, and Chic Series?

We offer 3 different publisher options for your books. The Casual Series is the most affordable magazine-style photobook we offer, with two cover choices, linen or leather, each in a variety of colors, or a smaller paperback version in a variety of cover choices. The page designs are simple and make a great alternative to your family scrapbooks or photo albums. The Classy Series is an impressive hardcover, square magazine-style book that allows YOU to decide on the cover design. It can be any color you choose, with or without any text, as many photos as you like, and the pictures and text can wrap from front to back. It comes in an attractive, frosted slip-case. This series also offers a less expensie softcover version. Finally, the Chic Series offers an all-panorama style book. Each page is coated with a clear, water-based lacquer prior to the mounting process. The lacquer is stain and water resistant. The pages are mounted on a firm core that makes them thicker than a magazine page (approx. 1/16"), and inflexible. The books lie flat when open; have rounded corners and gilded edges. They’re a wonderful choice for a wedding album, any special occasion, or for those who want only the best for any occassion, but are used most often for weddings.

What are the features and prices of the Casual Series Photobooks?

You have the option of selecting either single-sided printing or double-sided printing. Pricing is based on each printed page/side. Each sheet of paper in a book has two pages/sides. A 50 page book printed on both sides contains 25 sheets of paper. A 50 page book printed on one side contains 50 sheets, but costs the same. Either way, the price is based on 50 pages. There is no extra cost or cost benefit for selecting one print option over the other. If your book contains fewer than 20 pages (single-sided), the remaining pages will be blank. These could be used to mount mementos (ticket stubs, etc) or you can choose to have these blank pages eliminated when you purchase your book. You will be charged the 20-page minimum if your book contains fewer than 20 pages.

Single-sided Printing

All pages will be printed on the right side only. There are no images printed on any of the left-hand pages. If you decide to have a title page (immediately after the cover page) there will be nothing printed on the back of title page The next printed page in your book will be Page 2 (printed on the right side).

Minimum page requirement: 20 pages/sides (20 sheets printed on the right side only).

Maximum page limit: 50 pages/sides (50 sheets of paper printed on the right side only).

Double-sided Printing

All even numbered pages in your book will be printed on the left and all odd numbered pages will be printed on the right. The Title Page (text only) will be Page 1 and will be printed on the right-hand side. If you don’t have a Title Page, Page 1 will be your first page of photos, and will be printed on the right-hand side. Page 2 will be printed on the left-hand side. Page 3 will be printed on the right-hand side facing Page 2, etc.

Minimum page requirement: 20 pages/sides (10 sheets of paper printed on both sides)

Maximum page limit: 100 pages/sides (50 sheets of paper printed on both sides)

What are the features and prices of the Classy Series Photobooks?

With our Classy Series, YOU decide what you want the cover to look like. Any color, text, pictures - and the spine can be printed too. You can even use a panoramic picture to wrap all the way around from the front of the book to the back. These beautiful books are offered in 2 cover types.

This series comes in page increments of 10 or 20. If you have 22 pages, you pay the 30 page rate. If the book is 68 pages, you are charged the 80 page rate. You have the choice of having blank pages at the end (great for pasting in souvenirs or journaling) or eliminating them from the book. What are the features and prices of the Chic Series Photobooks?

This series offers our largest selection of covers and options. Because Chic Series is a panorama (two-page spread) book, the PAGE PRICE is actually for 2 sides, (2 pages if comparing the price to the Casual Series). The minimum number of pages is 10 double-sided pages (20 sides). The maximum number of pages is 45 double-sided spreads (90 sides).

A web page can simple not do justice to the beautiful quality of these books. They ARE expensive books. However the same books are 2-3 times more through photography companies. These are not magazine-style photobooks like the Casual and Classy series. Each gilded page is about 1/16" thick with a special finish. The pages are not paper as they appear in the main Photobook page of this web site as you “flip” through the book. They do not “bend”, or turn like a magazine page. The special hinge design allows this book to lie flat when opened. The cover leathers are top quality, the cameo is a special inlay. Each binding is made-to-order. When filled with your wedding or other special occasion memories, they are priceless.

Genuine leather is standard as a cover, although you can upgrade to a glove, distressed or Napa leather. Included with your book, is a soft “pillow case” and a handsome black presentation box. They make an elegant gift.
